Binah.ai Expands Capabilities: Organizations Can Now Detect Smokers and Tuberculosis Risk via Smartphone Cough Analysis

Binah.ai’s software-based solution is easy to use, infinitely scalable, affordable, and accessible anywhere, poised to significantly reduce the cost and time burden of tuberculosis risk and smoker detection

MAY 29, 2024 – Binah.ai, the leading provider of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered health and wellness check software, announced today that its technology now allows organizations to conduct respiratory health checks by simply having users cough into a smartphone microphone. The initial respiratory health indicators detect smokers and assess tuberculosis risk, with additional indicators expected to be available by the end of the year.

Binah.ai’s technology empowers organizations to enable anyone to measure and share a wide range of health and wellness indicators using a camera-equipped device such as a smartphone or tablet. The software-based solution measures important health data, including blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, sympathetic stress and more. It also offers bloodless blood tests such as hemoglobin* and hemoglobin A1c* (*currently under research). Additional bloodless blood tests will be available later this year.

How does the Binah.ai respiratory health check work?

Users cough into the smartphone microphone a few times, while advanced artificial intelligence analyzes over 4,000 unique data points and features of each cough, providing results for tuberculosis risk and smoker detection probability. Tuberculosis risk tests have shown a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 72%, surpassing the World Health Organization’s target for tuberculosis detection at 90% / 70%.

“Binah.ai continues to fulfill our promise to partners and the market by constantly expanding the range of body indicators available,” said David Maman, Co-founder and CEO of Binah.ai. “The new respiratory health monitoring checks are a critical addition to our comprehensive Health Data Platform, and we look forward to the positive impact they will have on our customers’ services and on people worldwide,” added Maman.

Why is monitoring respiratory health crucial?

According to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people worldwide may be affected by tuberculosis, with an additional 10 million cases arising annually. Meanwhile, tobacco claims the lives of over 8 million individuals each year, including an estimated 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke. The global costs associated with diagnosing and treating tuberculosis and smoking-related diseases are staggering and often defy accurate calculation. In certain regions, basic tuberculosis tests such as skin or sputum tests may range from $10 to $50. However, more advanced tests, like molecular tests, can be considerably more expensive, averaging from $50 to over $200 per test.

Smoking imposes a substantial economic burden on countries globally, especially in Europe and North America, where the tobacco epidemic is most severe.

Which industries can benefit from the new capabilities?

Organizations in various sectors such as insurance, healthcare, and wellness stand to gain significantly from these new indicators. They can enhance risk management practices while offering end-users exceptional monitoring capabilities that are user-friendly, universally accessible, and seamlessly shareable. This enables the delivery of more personalized services to end-users at reduced costs and supports their paths towards recovery and wellness, including smoking cessation.

When will smoker detection and tuberculosis risk be available at Binah.ai?

Both features will be available for trials with organizations in the beginning of Q3 /2024 through Binah Check, a ready-to-use app. Binah.ai will soon release a new SDK version that will include the new respiratory health monitoring capabilities, which organizations can easily integrate into their own apps or workflows.
